Overview
Its rare in these hectic times that a property full of world charm and character presents itself to the market and “Tearmann” (meaning sanctuary), truly is a hidden gem of a property. Accessed from a lane that connects to a minor local road on the Galway/Mayo border, and within a stones throw of Doonmacreena bridge, this property is in a convenient location, being a short drive to the towns of Dunmore, Tuam, Ballindine and Claremorris.
History – This “Ulster cottage” is steeped in history and can tell many good stories.1799 was an important year in English politics and for Ulster Catholics. The Government in London had implemented an act which forcibly removed Catholic tenant farmers from their homes and land. Scots and English who were loyal to the Crown and their Protestant faith were transplanted to Ulster areas deemed to be troublesome to the crown. The only land these people could afford was on the border of East Galway and Mayo. The land where they settled became known as Ulster Town or Baile Ultacht, which still exists today. A short distance away 23 cottages were built with a population of 260 people. Sadly today only one of these homes remains due to death and migration during the famine of the mid 1800s. Secondly the Government in London wishing to raise money for the war against Napoleon implemented a tax on windows. Quick thinking by these Ultachts saw them building windows in their cottages which were within the limits of being exempt from the tax on the outside but sloped outwards on the inside allowing more light in. They also installed half doors. These were in two parts which meant the top half could be open for light but the bottom half remained shut keeping children in and chickens out. On hearing of this the Prime minister Mr Pitt said ” These Irish are stealing revenue and God’s good light , they are involved in nothing less than DAYLIGHT ROBBERY. A phrase that has become cemented in the English language!
Situated on an impeccably maintained site of about half an acre, stepping into the property gives an old world feel yet with modern convenience. The property has been renovated and maintained to a high standard with traditional living space in the middle of the cottage with 2 bedrooms on either side. The extension to the rear has a kitchen with a bathroom to the side. Outside is an old granary that may be suitable for conversion and a stone outbuildings. The conscientious owners have even installed an outdoor walk in shower!
Walking around the site there is a pond with fish swimming which was constructed in recent times. There is also an outdoor dining area with uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside where you can see the three counties of Galway, Mayo & Roscommon. if you look close enough and are lucky you may even see some fairies or leprechauns in this magic garden!
