Overview
A Charming 3 bedroomed two storey farmhouse situated in a picturesque and peaceful location at Barnagreggaun just off the N60 (Claremorris to Castlebar Road) and close to the historical village of Mayo Abbey. The property which was built somewhere in the 1930’s in an area steeped in history as it is adjacent to the ruins of Brize Castle* which dates back to the 12th century. It is also situated on the edge of the Brize House** estate which was built in circa 1800.
The house which measures approximately 85 sq. Metres (915 sq. feet), is in need of full refurbishment and has not been lived in for a number of years. It has been dry lined internally in recent times and a new shower room fitted and rewiring. The house maintains many of it’s original features both inside and out, including a cast iron fireplace in the sitting room.
Outside is the old shed which is in total disrepair. There is almost 1.5 acres of top quality land surrounding the house which is accessed from a quiet country road which is well maintained and connects to the Brize to Mayo Abbey road. The house itself has a garden front and rear which is enclosed by a block wall which has been plastered and capped. It is also surrounded by beautiful mature trees.
Viewing of this property is strictly by appointment with the sole selling agent.
*Brize castle nowadays is a ruined castle, but, in the past, it was the main residence of the Prendergast’s from the 13th century onwards. From here this family, also known as ” Clann Muiris na mBri” ( The Clann Morris of Bree.), spread a strong power throughout the district. Both the town of Claremorris, ( Clann Morris) and the barony name Clanmorris, takes their name from them.
**Brize House was once owned by the Coughlan family. As well as farming the lands at Brize, the Coughlan’s also ran a race horse training stable at Brize and some very useful horses spent some time there. In 1932 Mr. John McEllin, the owner at the time ceded the lands west of the Westport Castlebar railway line, about one half of the estate, to the Land Commission. As a result of this five new homesteads were created plus additions of land to a few local tenants. The house for sale is one of these five.
